(2). The flowers of the apricot trees in this mountain make it fragrant and lots of people start to call it the Fragrant Hill.(info for your China vacations and travel)

Two main routes through the Xiangshan Mountain Park:

One route goes through the north area, with Spectacles Lake (Yanjing Lake) and the bridge, Study of Reading Heart (Jianxin Zhai) and Bright Temple (Zhao Miao). Study of Reading Heart was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644) and is a landscaped park inside Fragrant Hills Park. Bright Temple is a large Tibetan style lamasery complex built in 1780 as the residence for the sixth Panchen Lama during his visits to Emperor Qianlong. Buildings in the complex have partially been burned down. Among the surviving treasures are a majestic glazed-tiled archway in front of the complex, a terrace and a glazed-tiled pagoda. Bells hung on the eaves of the pagoda chime in breeze.

The second route leads through the south area of the park. Main attractions along the route include Tranqulity Green Lake (Jingcui Lake), Shuangqing Villa, Fragrant Temple, and Incense Burner Peak. This route is more difficult because it leads across the highest peak, Incense Burner Peak.

Admission fees:

Lhasa Travel Info For Your China Vacations-Vehicles In Lhasa

by moyang ·

This article is about the Lhasa travel and China vacations. You can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your Lhasa travel now.

Lhasa is the capital of the Tibet autonomous region in China. It is located at 3650 meters (12 000 feet) above sea level on the northern slopes of the Himalayas. Lhasa, which means “Land of the Gods”, is the heart of Tibet. Over 1,300 years old, it sits in a valley right next to the Lhasa River. Tourist resources are plenty, good hotels, tasty restaurants, travel agencies, Chinese department stores and supermarkets, in some parts of the city, you may find no difference to other Chinese cities, but the Tibetan influence is still strong and evident, especially around the old quarters near Barkhor.

In Lhasa, the most popular vehicles for the travellers are these 3: bus, taxi and manpower three-wheeled cart car.

There are several bus lines in the city of Lhasa.  You can take them to the major tourist attractions in Lhasa(the price is the same for all the bus lines: 2 rmb). The bus is not a bad choice for your Lhasa travel because the bus starts from the departure stop at every 1 or 2 minutes and it is not crowded(much more comfortable than the bus in other Chinese cities). Some tips here:The Tibetan Hospital of Lhasa(near the Square of Dazhao Temple) is most buses’ terminal and you can get in the bus there if you want.  An interesting thing I found out is that many buses here do not have bus stops in their way to the tourist attractions and all you need to do is to wave your hands to the bus driver. He/she will stop the bus for you(like what you do to get a taxicab). It is pretty funny,  :-)

Although Lhasa does not have a big population, the number of taxicabs in Lhasa is not small. In the downtown of Lhasa, the cost is always 10 rmb(no matter day or night). If you are going to some place a little bit far away, like the Zhebang Temple, you can bargain with the taxi driver first. Usually the cost is from 15 to 20 rmb. Another choice is to rent a taxicab for a whole day and it is about 200 to 300 rmb. (You can get more information about Lhasa travel and China vacations at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM)

The manpower three-wheeled cart car is a very interesting thing in Lhasa and it is also most travellers’ favourite vehicle. The capacity is 2 people and you can experience the real Tibetan people’s life by taking this specail vehicle. The manpower three-wheeled cart car can take you to lots of interesting places in Lhasa. If the cart car owner is a Tibetan, you will find it very hard to communicate with him because they don’t speak English or Mandarin Chinese. You will need to learn some basic Tibetan for the communication with them. Counting from 3 to 5 in Tibetan is very useful here because you can use it to bargain with the cart car owner, :-) .  If the cart car owner is a Han people, usually they will ask you to pay 1 or 2 rmb extra fees.(They speak Mandarin Chinese and this will help you to understand the life in Lhasa better if you can speak Mandarin too.)
Here is some useful Tibetan for your Lhasa travel(Tibetan for the number from 1 to 10):
1: ji, 2: ni, 3: song, 4: xi, 5: nga, 6: chu, 7: diu, 8: gei, 9: wu, 10: jio.

Travelling by bike in Lhasa is also a very pleasant experience. Many hotels and motels have the bike rental services and usually the cost is about 2-3 rmb for a hour and 20-30 rmb for a day.

Macau Travel Info For Your China Vacations

by moyang ·

This article is about the China vacations and you can find some useful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now.

The Macau Special Administrative Region, commonly known as Macau or Macao, is one of the two special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east and south. The territory has thriving industries such as textiles, electronics and toys, and a notable tourist industry that boasts a wide range of hotels, resorts, stadiums, restaurants and casinos. This makes it one of the richest cities in the world. Macau’s economy is based largely on tourism, much of it geared toward gambling. The gaming, tourism and hospitality industry is estimated to contribute more than 50% of Macau’s GDP, and 70% of Macau government revenue.

First, there are three useful advices for your Macau travel:

(1). The RMB or U.S. dollars are not accepted in Macau and you’d better do the currency exchange before you arrive Macau. You can do the currency exchange in Macau for sure, but the exchange rate are not so good here (comparing with other cities in China). The digital video and digital camera are good equipments for your Macau travel. You can use your cell phone here if your cell phone service provider can provide you the international roam service in Macau.

(2). If you are planning to visit Macau in the weekend and will need to stay here for one night, you’d better ask a local travel agent ( travel agents in Macau or Zhuhai) to make a reservation for you first. You will find it very difficult to find a hotel with reasonable price if you don’t do the reservation in advance. The cost will be about HK $ 700-1000 if you don’t make a reservation. If you do this in advance, your travel agent can help you to get your room at only about HK $ 300. Sometimes it is even lower than this if you are lucky.

(3). The people in Macau speak three languages: English, Portuguese and Cantonese. You can choose the Xinmalu Street (Shizheng Square) as your first stop in Macau. The Macau Government Tourist Office is in this street and you can get free Macau maps here. They can be very helpful for your Macau travel.  ( You can find more information about the China vacations, Beijing flights and Lhasa travel at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

Tips for Your First Time Lhasa Travel or Tibet Travel-china Vacations Info

by moyang ·

This article is about the Lhasa travel and Tibet travel. You can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your trip to Tibet now.

Tibet is a mysterious land. It is called the “roof of the world” and there are many beautiful stories about this old-line place. You will not feel this unique attraction until you are really standing here in the land of Tibet.

Here are some tips for your first time travel to Tibet:
1. To get in Tibet by air is not a very good choice. The sudden transition of the altitude will possibly cause the severe altitude sickness, which is a big concern for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel.

2. The Qinghai-Tibet train began to operate in July 2006. It took less than 48 hours to travel from Beijing to Tibet by train. The cheapest ticket is only 389 RMB .This kind of transportation is better than the air because you can slowly adapt to Tibet’s high altitude instead of a sudden transition of the altitude if you take the plane. The railways are now connected Tibet directly with Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou and Xining. You can find more details about the train services to Tibet from our website: Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM (Lhasa travel, Tibet travel and China vacations Info)

3. You can bring some fruits and bread on your way to Tibet. For the first time travellers to Tibet,  the chance to get some altitude sickness is pretty big and you will not have the appetite for regular food because of this sickness. Most people vomitted after eating meats. Fruits are very good choice in this kind of situation.

4. Some medicines(Like flu medicine, antidiarrheal, woundplast, etc) are very helpful for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel. Some people said that the flu would cause the severe altitude sickness and kill the first time Tibet travellers. Actually it is not that terrifying to get some cold in Tibet. You need to take some flu medicine immediatly when you have a cold or fever. This will help to alleviate the altitude sickness in Tibet.

5. If you arrive at Lhasa,Tibet on the midnight, the motels near the railway station is a good choice for you. Some people believe that it will consume too much oxygen if you have a shower in Tibet. This is a ridiculous theory from the travellers getting in Tibet by air. You don’t need to worry about this oxygen issue if you got here by train and your body is going to stink after the long time travel if you don’t have a shower.  :-)   The price for these motels is about 70 rmb for a two beds room with hot water.

6. If you don’t like the motels in Tibet, you can choose the Balang hostel, Jiri hostel or Xueyu hotel instead. The advantage is that you can find some friends with common interests there and share the costs for the Tibet trip. Balang hostel: 70 rmb for a two beds room, 90 rmb for a three beds room, 100 rmb for a four beds room. 24 hours hot water and laundry services are available in Balang hostel.

7. It is really cold in the morning and you will need to wear a sweater or jacket. Do not take the risk because you will be in big trouble if you get a cold in Tibet.

8. To get out of Tibet by air is a smart choice. You don’t need to worry about the altitude sickness anymore and there are airline services available every day in Lhasa. The cost is 1200 rmb from Lhasa to Chengdu and the taxi service from the downtown of Lhasa to Lhasa Gongga airport costs 120 rmb.

China vacations travel guide – Shenzhen travel info

by moyang ·

This article is about the China vacations and Shenzhen travel. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your Shenzhen travel now.

Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China’s Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China’s economic liberalization under the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, the area became China’s first – and ultimately most successful – Special Economic Zone. The best time to visit Shenzhen is October – March (next year).

Eat in Shenzhen:
There are all kinds of restaurants in Shenzhen and the price is not high. The sea food here is very cheap comparing with other big Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, etc. If you are a student, you can find the delicious Guilin ground rice all over Shenzhen and it is only about 5 – 7 rmb. The Mcdonald’s and KFC are also very easy to find here in Shenzhen. For the big Chinese restaurants, you can try the special price dishes first. Sometimes you can get very good deals in these places (Young pigeon for 8 rmb, 1 kilogramme of shrimp for 16 rmb) .

Hotels in Shenzhen:
If you have some friends working in the big companies of Shenzhen, you can ask them to book the hotels for you. Usually, the employees of these big Shenzhen companies can get very good deals for you (comparing with what you can get online). The hostel is another good option for you. I recommend the Zdwe Hostel of Shenzhen. It is located in: 16 Tonggulu Street, 5th floor of Zhonghelou building, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The cost is very low here (only 20 rmb for one person). Here is the phone number: 0136 – 0253 – 5943.

Taxi and bus services in Shenzhen:
The taxi service is a little bit expensive in Shenzhen. The city bus is another good option for your Shenzhen travel. You can call the number – 160, if you don’t know which bus can take you to your destination. The buses in Shenzhen are all self-service ticketing buses and you will need to prepare some coins for them. The services of these buses are not bad and you can ask the bus driver to tell you when and where to get off. ( From Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM, you can get more info about the China vacations, Lhasa travel and Beijing flights. )

The scenic spots of Shenzhen:
(1). Dameisha and Xiaomeisha Beaches:
Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches are located at Dapeng Bay. Dubbed “Hawaii of the East,” the beaches are popular recreational areas during holidays.

(2). Overseas Chinese Town:
Located in the western part of Shenzhen, Overseas Chinese Town embraces the theme parks of Window of the world, Splendid China, China Folk Culture Villages and Happy Valley. The parks feature a wide variety of replicas of natural scenery and historical architecture, reflecting the essence of traditional Chinese and international culture. The area serves as a model for the city in urban planning, construction and horticulture.

(3). Shennan Thoroughfare:
Running through downtown Shenzhen and extending 17.2km, Shennan Thoroughfare is one of the busiest streets in Shenzhen. Many landmark buildings are along this street. It is also a representation of Shenzhen‘s night scenery.

It is over 1.6 million sq. km (larger than the combined area of all the European states from Germany to Spain), which takes up about 1/6 of the country’s territory.  “Xinjiang” means “New Frontier” in Manchu, a name given during the Manchu Qing Dynasty. A number of different ethnic groups live here in Xinjjiang. The largest one is the Uyghur people.

In my point of view, the best time to visit Xinjiang is June – September. You can see the beautiful flowers and trees, eat some special Xinjiang fruits here during this period of time. There are lots of flights connecting Urumqi (capital city of Xinjiang) with other big cities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Xi an, etc). It is about 4 hours and 20 minutes’ flight from Shanghai to Urumqi, 3 hour and 30 minutes’ flight from Beijing to Urumqi, 8 hours’ flight from Guangzhou to Urumqi.

Here are the most popular travelling routes of Xinjiang:
(1). Xinjiang Heavenly Lake (Tianchi): This is a one-day travelling route. You can start from Urumqi and it only takes 1 and a half hours to get to the Xinjiang Heavenly Lake(Tianchi) from Urumai.

(2). Xinjiang Canus: You can start from Urumqi in the morning and you will arrive at Buerjin in the night. If you wanna stay in Buerjin for a night, you can try the roast fishes here. These fishes are really specail and you will not be able to find the same species in other places. Another good stuff here is the famous “Mrs Russia” wine. It is a Russian wine( its real name is kvass ) made from barley and honey. Because it is brought here by an old Russian lady, the local people here name it the “Mrs Russia”. You can buy some “Mrs Russia” here but they are not suitable for the long journey (they will begin to ferment in 2 or 3 days). Leaving Buerjin, it is about 3 hours’ ride to the Xinjiang Canus. There are hotels in Canus but they are a little bit expensive. The Tuwa wood cabin is another choice for you. It is about 30 – 40 rmb for one person if you stay in this cabin. The restaurants in Canus are expensive too because all the food materials have to be transported to Canus from the towns very far away. Canus is a big  scenic spot and you’d better make a 2 days’ plan for it. ( To get more info about the China vacations and Lhasa travel, you can visit Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

(3). Xinjiang Ili: The purpose of this trip is to visit the beautiful prairie of Xinjiang. The accomadation condition is not so good for this trip ( it is the prairie, :-)   ). The good thing is that the food expense is low here. For this trip, you will need to make a 2 days’ plan.

Some tips for your Xinjiang travel:
(1). The climate of Xinjiang is very dry and the ultraviolet radiation will damage your skin. The high SPF sunscreen or sunblock will be a must have for your travel.
(2). The difference in temperature between day and night is big in Xinjiang and you will need to bring a sweater or jacket here even you are planning to visit Xinjiang in the Summer.
(3). Xinjiang is so big and you will need a long time plan for your Xinjiang travel. You will not feel the real attraction of Xinjiang if your plan is only about 1 or 2 days.
(4). There are south Xinjiang travel and north Xinjiang travel for the tourists. North Xinjiang is for the travellers to see the beautiful natural scenes and the South Xinjiang is more like a Minority folk tourism of China.

China vacations info – Can I use America issued debit or credit card in China?

by moyang ·

This article is about the China vacations. You can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now. As a Chinese graduate student pursuing my Master’s Degree in the U.S. , I think I can have a better understanding of how to use the America issued debit or credit card in China.  :-)

Lots of traveller have this kind of questions: Can I use America issued debit or credit card ( VISA,Mastercard,American Express,Discover ) in China? How to get cash and make purchases in China?

For most international travellers, they don’t have a Chinese credit card. But the Visa and Mastercard credit cards are accepted at most ATMs (with the VISA or Mastercard logos in them) in China. You can get cash from these ATMs in China using your American VISA or Mastercard credit cards. Some Chinese banks also provide this kind of service and you can get cash (U.S. dollars or Chinese RMB) from your Visa or Mastercard credit cards by asking the tellers in these banks. But the fees are a little bit high and you will need to pay attention to this. For making purchases with the Visa or Mastercard credit cards in China, you will need to find the VISA or Mastercard POS machines. Most international hotels and high grade department stores accept the Visa and Mastercard. Technically, these 2 types of credit cards are accepted in China, but in most places of China, the VISA or Mastercard POS machines are not easy to find. Most Chinese retail merchants do not have these specail POS machines, all they got is the China UnionPay POS machines, which do not accept the Ameria issued VISA or Mastercard. (more info about Beijing airfare and China vacations at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM)

For the Discover credit card, it is much more convinient than Visa and Mastercard in China. China UnionPay is now the partner of Discover and they made a deal which enables the Discover cardholders to make purchases and get ATM cash in China. You can get cash in all the China UnionPay ATMs in China. ( Actually, about 99% of the ATMs in China are run by China UnionPay and this makes the Discover credit cards acceptable in almost all the ATMs in China ) Now China UnionPay has 80,000 ATMs and 365,000 retail merchants in China. For getting cash with the Discover credit cards from the ATM, you will need to pay some fees for this service. But if you wanna make purchases with them, there is no any hidden fees for your purchases in China. Pretty cool, right? (more info about Shanghai airfare and China vacations at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM)

I used my Discover credit card many times in China. It is always working. No any hidden fees even when you use it in the small cities or towns in China. (you will need to pay a 3% foreign transaction fees for Visa or Mastercard credit cards) Some chinese cashiers do not hear about this Discover credit card before, you can just tell them it is a dual currency China UnionPay card. In China, your Discover credit card is the same as the China UnionPay card in making purchases. No differences at all !

One good thing I find out about getting cash in the Chinese ATMs is that we can use the BOA (Bank Of America) debit cards to get ATM cash for free in China. Now the BOA is the partner of the CCB (China Construction Bank) and they made a deal which enables the BOA debit cardholders to get cash (the Chinese RMB) for free in all the CCB’s ATMs in China. No hidden fees for this service. For instance, if the exchange rate is 1:7 (1 U.S. dollars=7 Chinese RMB), you will get 7 rmb for every dollar in your BOA debit card account. Although BOA claims that the BOA debit cards are accepted in all the ATMs of the CCB, I found that it is not working in some CCB’s ATMs. Some friends of mine got cash successfully from the CCB’s ATMs in some small cities or towns of China. But I failed sometimes in some CCB’s ATMs in Beijing and Shanghai. Maybe this is because of the differences of these ATMs. The CCB’s ATMs are new in the small Chinese cities, but you will probably meet some old ATMs in the big Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai. A lot of people think that the old CCB’s ATMs is not able to provide this kind of service to the BOA debit cardholders.(more info about Lhasa travel, Beijing airfare and Shanghai airfare at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM)

For the American Express credit card, it is not widely accepted in China. As I know, you can get cash with the American Express credit card in the Starwood and Ritz Carl Ton’s  international ATMs. The CITI’s ATMs accept this credit card too. Most international hotels and high grade department stores accept this type of credit card in Shanghai and Beijing. But it is not as good as the Visa, Mastercard or Discover in China.

If you wanna make purchases online in China, most Chinese web sites do not accept the Discover credit card. I once bought something with my Chase Visa credit card. But I paid a 3% foreign transaction fees for it.

In summary, if you are planning your China travel, I think you can bring some U.S. dollars in cash. If you need some Chinese RMB, you can get cash with your BOA debit card in most CCB’s ATMs (free currency exchange service). For the shopping in China, the best way to make the purchases is through a Discover credit card (no foreign transaction fees).

Travel To China, H1N1 – Info for your China vacations

by moyang ·

This article is about the H1N1 and China travel. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now.

The A(H1N1) quarantine policy (from several big Chinese web sites) in China:

1. If you don’t have a fever when getting off the plane in the airports of China, you don’t need to worry about quarantine policy of China at all. If you do have a fever, you will need to do a medical examination in the city where you enter China. This is to make sure that you don’t get the A(H1N1) flu.( more info about “Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations” at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

2. If there is some people having a fever in your plane to China and your seat is very close to him/her (less than 3 meters away), you will need to do the medical examination in the hospital when this people is confirmed as a A(H1N1) flu patient. The Chinese Malaria Control Center will contact you when they find some confirmed A(H1N1) cases in the plane you take. If you sit far away from the A(H1N1) patient (more than 3 meters away) in the plane, you don’t need to worry about this issue at all. No one is going to ask you to do a medical examination even when there is some confirmed A(H1N1) cases in your plane to China.

3. Some people did the quarantine for a week in Beijing and Jiangshu when they got to China. They only did this voluntarily. One one is going to ask you to do this. But in my point of view, this can be good both for your family and your friends. You don’t wanna your close people to be threatened by the A(H1N1) flu too, right? ( more info about “Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations” at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

Some personal experience when people arrived at the airports of Beijing,Shanghai or Hongkong:

1. My parents traveled to China last Monday. All they got in the Beijing Capital Airport is to go through a Temperature Monitoring Device. That’s it. When they stayed in the hotel, the Malaria Control Center didn’t contact them. Now there are more than 200 A(H1N1) cases in China and the Chinese people don’t pay so much attention to this flu as they used to be. (I think it is very natural for the Chinese people to be very nervous about this A(H1N1) flu. The SARS was such a disaster here in the year of 2003. )

2. I flied to China last week and I am in China now. I am not very familar with the A(H1N1) quarantine policy in China. I will only talk about my personal experience here. I entered China in the Shanghai Pudong Airport. In the plane, the airhostesses helped us to do the body temperature check once. When we arrived at Shanghai, some “astronauts” checked our body temperature again. When I left the U.S., my body temperature was about 37 Centigrade. (because I was sleeping poorly these days) But they didn’t find me out. Maybe I was not having a fever when they checked my body temperature in the airport. I then transfered to another plane. No one contacted me about the A(H1N1) flu issue any more. I can do whatever I like in China. By the way, I left my address in China and phone number in the Shanghai Pudong Airport of course.

3. I visited Hong Kong last week. All I did is to fill out some forms. No body temperature check at all. When I arrived at Shenzhen, some people asked me to go through the Temperature Monitoring Device and fill out some other forms. ( more info about “Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations” at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

By 06/13/2009, there are 293 A(H1N1) flu cases in China. ( Beijing: 38, Guangdong: 37, Fujian: 25, Shanghai: 17, Sicuan: 15, Hubei: 9, Zhejiang: 6, Tianjin: 4, Shandong: 3, Hunan: 2, Henan: 1, Jiangsu: 1, Shanxi: 1, Liaoning: 1, Guizhou: 1, Jiangxi: 1, Hainan: 3, Hongkong: 84, Taiwan: 44 )
